This is my first tattoo.

For a long time, my family, and a boyfriend all had a mold of me in their minds. They all believed I needed to be a small town christian girl who never spoke unless spoken to, and did everything they told me to do. The thought sickened me. I’ve always been a reckless, free spirited individual. They didn’t seem to understand that and continue to press their ideals and beliefs onto me.
It wasn’t until a cold rainy morning when this quote from Jane Eyre stuck out to me. For those who have not read it, Jane was leaving Mr. Rochester and she strongly told him “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will, which I now exert to leave you”
This spoke to me so finally after 3 months of careful consideration, I got it. Charlotte’s words have reminded me no one can ever hold me down and change me. I am always going to be myself, and that no one can decide who I am, besides me.
